Fondamenta Nuove

copyright Maria Phillips a.k.a Bess X Jones 2014

The view through the windows of the water-bus is of Fondamenta Nouve at the northern end of Venice, and is the Jewish quarter, the original Ghetto which means ‘jet of steam’ on account of the many glass factories and foundries that were to be found there during the 1600-1700’s. This area of Venice was perhaps the most painted by Canaletto in his earlier years, being some of the first ‘canvases’ he ever produced for private display. This part of Venice also happens to be very special to me. Maybe I’ll write a story about it sometime.
